Before I went to see the film I read the reviews and noted the common criticism that the love affair was too sudden, with the characters seeming to know nothing about each other; I wasn't put off, being especially interested in the background to the film. This happened to many men; war suspends normal life and turns people into risk-takers.
I think this film missed a trick. Keira Knightly shows herself, again, to be an actress of real depth and range -- something more than the often two-dimensional acting that American audiences are more and more being subjected to in recent years! Seen it twice already. Keira Knightly was wonderful as usual and the supporting males were amazing. I enjoyed the film, which kept my attention, despite the fact that it used all the usual tricks to pull at the heartstrings, with people meeting up in unlikely ways at just the right moment, and a treasured photo being used to give us a glimpse of the background to a couple's pain.
